Jayne Allen’s “Black Girls Must Die Exhausted” is the first novel in a three-book series about modern womanhood. I have read an excerpt from “Black Girls Must Be Magic” and am eager to continue this series; however, my current commitment to a book club means I’ll be investing the coming months in reading and discussing Lisa Wingate’s “The Prayer Box.”

The novel follows Tabitha Walker, named after her grandmother, as she faces an unexpected diagnosis; it captures her journey of balancing love, career, relationships, and the ticking of her biological clock.

From start to finish, Jayne Allen’s intimate storytelling will captivate you. The novel is full of wisdom from older characters, lending a magical quality to the first novel in a three-book series; even when the advice may seem questionable, it all comes together beautifully.

“Black Girls Must Die Exhausted” suggests that Black women face unique challenges that can take a toll on their overall health. Nevertheless, this book does a great job of not only recognizing these unique challenges but also confronting them directly, whether it’s with family, friends
