Lisa Wingate’s "The Prayer Box" was the first book chosen by our Facebook group, The SisterHood Book Club.

If you are interested in joining an online book club, I will include blog posts about my experiences in the addendum, which will include previous discussions and advice on how to get the most out of the experience.

I had to get used to Lisa Wingate’s storytelling because it follows Tandi Jo Reese’s story concurrently with Iola Anne Poole’s.

Tandi, fleeing a messy and dangerous past, finds herself and her children living in a rental cottage across from Iola’s big Victorian house on Hatteras Island.

Tandi would go into Iola's house to check on her because there had been no lights on or off for days, and there were no window heat-and-air units running at night. Tandi would find Iola lifeless in bed.

While cleaning out Iola’s Victorian house, Tandi finds 81 carefully decorated prayer boxes, one for each year from Iola’s youth to her last days. Iola was 91 when she died.

The story of Iola’s life was hidden inside the boxes, with hopes, fears, and wishes written on random pieces of paper.
