Don't Judge A Story By Its Title: Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover

What a title, right? That's intentional! This story is inspired by my overall experience on Medium and my recent browsing experience on Netflix. More on this later. The title of this story plays on the idiom: "Don't judge a book by its cover." When hearing this, was it in reference to a person? Before I continue on, this is a conversational piece, so do what you all need to do in order to relax then dive right into my thoughts on how this idiom is "easier said than done" — and how we're all doing this to an extent on Medium.

As of late, I've been thinking more about my identity as a writer on this platform when I'm constantly getting story notifications from writers that I've connected with and I've been recommended.

As I've been reading a great deal of Medium's stories, I've realized that each writer has a niche, or writes on many topics — They may even be experimental with their writing, like myself! Writing should be about showcasing our personality while connecting with others. We can learn a great deal from each other. A lot of times, it's not even what's necessarily written (how it moves us) that sparks something exciting within us and inspires the next best thing!

On this platform, titles are designed to hook readers in, so we have to consider how we must craft them. On Netflix, I often find myself thinking that there are not enough good movies on this streaming platform because I judged movies based on their covers. When I would go back and play some of them, I realized how enjoyable some of them were to watch! Therefore, dare to take chances on movies and things that don't instantly intrigue you, you may just enjoy them.

I've concluded that we tend to judge things on a surface level and that's not an inherently bad thing, until it translates over to people that are multidimensional. We must extend grace to each other. When it comes to things, it's okay to have preferences, but we should be open to trying new things too.
