Medium Engagement & Earnings
Medium Partner Program
A sad but fitting final article for this publication. And now, with Medium actively causing earnings to dip for ‘meta’ articles, the pub is dead. It was so helpful to have a place where everyone could come to find tips and tricks for writing because it’s so hard to get started and learn. What a shame.
Today, I received a comment notification on “SEE YOU LATER, MEDIUM!,” which I published on January 15, 2025, in ‘How To Increase Your Followers Number,’ a publication dedicated to growing on Medium while improving one’s writing. It was only upon reading this comment that I realized my post was the final entry in the publication—it is a bittersweet moment.
In this post, I will share my thoughts on the platform after three months since publishing “SEE YOU LATER, MEDIUM!,” along with some of my stats.
The opportunity to be rewarded for my writing drew me to write here. When I joined the Medium Partner Program, it was not required, though it seems fair to pay for a membership, as it provides greater earning potential for all writers.
Initially, I did not pay for a membership because I wanted to test the waters. Eventually, I became a member to have access to unlimited stories and to support other writers that I enjoy. However, I later discovered that some writers had their accounts suspended or put in timeout due to excessive activity, which never seemed fair to me.
While the potential to earn money from my writing was initially what drew me to the platform, it was not the only reason. It was also the opportunity to build an audience who organically engages with my writing.
Most of my recent engagement has been on Medium-related posts. I always strive to avoid sounding like I am ranting, so I constantly try to connect it back to readers with helpful writing tips or offer other invaluable insights.
In the past, Medium-related posts did not focus much on platform issues, if at all. Unfortunately, that has changed now since they have adversely affected my engagement and earnings.
I understand it is my responsibility to cultivate a loyal following, but with the many changes and issues on this platform, when I decided to consistently write here, it made this process difficult. I also realized that some supporters were not genuinely supportive but used me to grow their audience and increase their earnings.
Ultimately, I decided to cancel my membership, as my experience on Medium did not improve.
Some readers informed me that others’ engagement and earnings returned to normal. This could be attributed to their consistent writing and cultivation of a loyal following, whereas some of us had scaled back.
I am uncertain if I will remain in the Medium Partner Program since I deactivated my membership. However, I could not continue my membership knowing that Medium is unlikely to resolve the issues while profiting from my membership. Again, at the time of enrolling in the Medium Partner Program, it was not required for me to pay for a membership so hopefully this does not affect my eligibility in the program.
“If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.”
I will continue writing here, although the frequency will depend on the engagement of my posts and whether it is organic. In the future, I may reactivate it if the engagement and earnings improve, provided I am still in the program.
Thank you for taking the time to read. Hopefully, you gained something invaluable from it. Let’s chat in the comments.
