Anticipatory grief is a term that might be unfamiliar to you unless you’ve experienced the prolonged uncertainty of a loved one’s critical condition. I’ve been grappling with my emotions since last August, trying to come to terms with the unfolding events. It’s a difficult position to be in, watching someone you care about cling to life with slim hopes of recovery.

As a family, we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue life support at an agreed-upon time. I’ve taken on the role of arranging everything and acting as the spokesperson. Now, I’m hoping for my family’s support beyond the arrangements for the end-of-life. Although he’s still with us thanks to life support, we’re unsure of what will happen once he’s weaned off the ventilator.

The possibility exists that he may breathe on his own, whether it’s for a brief moment or a span of days. The uncertainty of the situation extends beyond that, and it’s an aspect that needs consideration. Additionally, the financial burden of making arrangements while your loved one is present cannot be overlooked.

This could have been made less difficult had there been more investment in the family from the start. There were so many things that transpired that called on me to be proactive.
