Tax Season 💸
Are you getting a refund, paying taxes, or both?
I am not asking you to divulge; I am genuinely curious because, for the first time in a long time, I will not be receiving a refund. Paying taxes does not entice me either, but it is the name of the game (the thing that I look the least forward to on Medium).
According to Medium, “If you earn over $10 during the year, you will receive a 1099-Misc from us which you can use to file taxes. Any taxes due to the US will be paid at that time.”
It is important to normalize conversations about money so everyone has the chance to build wealth and achieve financial freedom.
I am taking this opportunity to share how my past part-time position cost me money, so you know what to avoid when seeking a part-time position.
Going into the interview, I knew that this was a temporary part-time position with no clear end date and no benefits, and the work schedule would go out at the end of each week, but I did not expect for it to constantly change, sometimes go out late, and then our roles would change and stagger.
It was brought to my attention in the interview that I would be working at both campuses, one of which required me to pay tolls. However, I was assured that it would not be frequently at the one that required me to pay tolls. I did not need to pay for parking at either location.
The hourly competitive rate is why I was drawn to the part-time position; it was not competitive to me because my hours would be cut soon.
I was not the first to be hired. It was like a revolving door because people were constantly quitting and being hired on. Eventually I applied for unemployment benefits because I was making so little, and I qualified for them.
I knew it was time to go when they kept extending our contract and hiring people while still cutting my hours. It was evident that this work arrangement benefited them more than it benefited part-time employees.
These companies oftentimes hire for part-time positions, so they do not have to include benefits in the work arrangement, etc.
