A viral video recently made its rounds online—a girl in a pink jacket at a Manchester mall. People were divided: was it real, staged, or AI-generated? Watching it made me reflect on how some footage feels both plausible and unreal—and I’m realizing that the overconsumption of AI, whether intentional or not, may be having the opposite effect of what we expect. It might even be desensitizing us.

I now find myself hesitant to trust or engage with content at face value. In the past, I mentioned that AI is shaped by human perception and use. But recently, it feels like the lines between AI, real events, and human experiences have become so blurred that I start questioning what’s real at all.

It makes me wonder—were AI advancements also meant to make us question not only what’s fake, but even what we know is real?

Some say AI-generated individuals are nearly indistinguishable from real people—and while I agree to some extent, there’s often a subtle, unnatural quality to their expressions or gestures when observed closely. Many still appear overly polished or move in slightly robotic ways.
